«I intend to destroy / my current identity / because I never resembled it for a moment.» This is how twenty-two-year-old Pavlos Andreou officially begins his poetic journey. With this first book he laid the foundations of a poetic edifice. I look forward with interest to what comes next.

With this line the poet reveals his intentions without evasion or self-deception. He begins fully aware that if the world today has started to lose its social identity, the cause lies first of all in the maladjusted temperament of each of us. The poet is searching for an open space where everything is possible. Though it is a debut, Andreou's work has the virtues of a mature artist who uses every means available to communicate meaningfully with the other.

Giorgos Christodoulou
Philologist · Thraka Magazine · 26/02/2023

The poetry collection by this young writer, making his debut in modern Greek letters, is a cry in both major and minor tones. It does not follow the well-trodden path of the latest trend in Cypriot poetic production.

Instead, in a fertile and creative way, he absorbs the inherited traumatic circumstances through a clouded mirror. Being an exceptionally restless spirit and a genuine representative of an active youth, he revolts, erupts, protests, cries out. Mr. Andreou's poetry is flooded with imagination, childlike innocence, critical unease and sarcasm. With the weapons offered to him by surrealism, he sometimes obscures and sometimes illuminates his thoughts.

His first poetry collection is steeped in nostalgia for the lost innocence of childhood, for the past and the memories of his particular homeland. The poet records poetically a coming-of-age story through a captivating journey with words.

His compass throughout life is the people he loves and their ideals, the memories of his childhood years. This game of hide-and-seek with words and unspoken feelings runs through the entire collection. The poet becomes the guardian of memory, the defender of a truth that, through his words, he wishes to bring to light. Poetry is the path he chooses to recall the events that some choose to silence.

«Eyemisting Icecream» is the expression of the young creator's transition from innocence to the realization of a reality that his sense of justice rejects. This work springs from a deep existential «scraping» of memory, thought and inquiry.

The pillars of this young creator's pen are three: deep reflection, excessive lyricism, lofty expression. The inspiration seems guided by an overwhelming experience. The inner rhythm marks his position at the threshold between childlike innocence and the realistic awareness of an absurd world. This is certainly not an easily approachable writing. To decipher it, one must have experienced loss.

«I am a wave», I translate this as follows: I carry within me a force, a different energy, I do not stop moving for a second. And indeed his poetry carries something fresh; it has power, austerity, the essential ingredient for it to be poetry.

I will dwell on the title: Eyemisting Icecream, a wonderful counterpoint. It carries an innocence, the promise of the substance that delights our taste buds. It promises pleasure combined with the revolutionary spirit that tear gas carries. Love cannot help but be poetry, and poetry cannot help but be love. In any case, this first collection leaves the best impressions and sets the bar high.

From the title itself, the cold-hot contrast betrays an unusual poetic genius. The aversion to the dominant current of established empty talk becomes explosive when accompanied by groundbreaking, ecstatic poeticity.

We must nurture new voices. It is like fanning the fire in the furnace with the bellows. Surrealist narrativity, depiction of associations. Playful irony, aesthetics drawn from comics of past decades. This is an explosive poetic confession. A highly promising voice.

«A rebel with a cause» - The poetry collection of the publishing debutant Cypriot poet Pavlos Andreou seems from beginning to end to be a cry of multiple shades. A cry of despair, of threat, a cracked cry, a knife-cry, a semitone-cry.

In a few rare moments, when the sounds cease, a unanimous silence prevails. Running through all the stages of a revolutionary sequence, of a tidal wave. P.A., with the surge-rage of his youthful soul, leads a battle on two fronts. On the one hand, against his external enemies, those who plundered and slaughtered the homeland, and on the other against the demons that torment his existence: loss, abandonment, betrayal, uncertainty, unspoken erotic desire.

The poet's struggle is painful. P.A. tramples through wounds: «I prepared the operating room / I sewed them up / Then they stitched / wishes of recovery / with a needle without a tip», travels carrying luggage with «a torn label», dozes in the «children's slaughterhouse» in Famagusta, dreams of love with «a halo without a wreath». Wherever there is a human memory, it follows him.

Eyemisting Icecream, the title of the book. Surreal, it foretells what follows. The icecream in the child's mouth melts, transforms into tear gas, seals the eyes. P.A. dips the pen of his poetry into surrealism, perhaps because the idealism of his youth cannot bear to describe despair through realistic verses.

With overflowing imagination, sarcasm and tenderness, he moves in and out of light and darkness, undermining the reader's small world. Poetry in his hands becomes his weapon and his lover. «Unto us a Poet is born».

Our era, its «illnesses», the «death cords» of another era the poet did not live through, but whose consequences he experiences deeply in his soul, are all transfused into his pen and his words.

His poetic identity has laid solid foundations for what is to come, which promises to be brilliant! And whoever chooses to share in the poetry of the young Pavlos Andreou may discover something new about themselves.

Amid the countless intellectual ferments taking place on the martyred Great Island, new poetic voices emerge that bring a new synthesis to the already feverish intellectual whirl of Cypriot thought.

One of these new voices is Pavlos Andreou. From Angeliki Apostolopoulou's preface we are prepared for the fact that we are dealing with a poet who «swears by his words». A poetry collection that brings to mind scenes from barricades and the Cypriot guerrilla struggle, transformed into a clever surrealist iconoclasm.

Giorgos Frangos
Journalist-Art Critic

Anything but the work of a beginner: that is how the poems of the young, barely 22-year-old poet Pavlos Andreou appear. These are poems that are settled on every level - in tone, in style, in overall aesthetics. The level of this first quality collection is a pleasant surprise.

The poet treats contemporary Cypriot reality in a contemporary and modernist manner. With modern means of expression, existential experimentation, allegorical aspiration and cinematically textured images. His images are inventive, while most of his wordplay carries an anti-occupation undertone. I want to stress again that P.A. consistently invests in the situation, neither in the idea nor in the emotion. This austerity is the main safeguard for the aesthetic realization of a poem. I express the certainty that there will be a continuation in the poetic journey of P.A. that has just begun. And I predict that this continuation will be even better.

Christos Mavris
Literary Critic

It truly gives me great joy, and I believe it is also a blessing for the literature of Cyprus, when I read poetry books by our young writers that genuinely impress with the maturity of their poetic writing.

In this small book the young poet presents 30 short poems that leave one speechless with the maturity that distinguishes them. They are poems crafted with mastery and Doric sobriety, standing out for the density of their poetic substance and above all the reflections they convey, as well as for the poet's boldness of expression. P. Andreou's poetry is cryptic, enigmatic, polysemic and multithematic but, I would say, deliberately provocative and at moments incomprehensible. Yet it carries within it the magic of poetry, which dissolves any imperfections it may have.

The poet essentially surveys today's social reality and is inspired by themes such as the physical exploitation of people, and especially of women; the degradation of human dignity by serious illnesses; existential fear in general; and also the emptiness and sorrow left by the loss of loved ones. Beneath this poetry runs, like an underground vein, our modern History, centred on the recent Cypriot tragedy and above all the drama of the enclosed city of Famagusta, which must under no circumstances be forgotten.

Panagiotis Nikolaidis
Poet, Philologist, Critic

With his first, handsomely produced poetry collection «Eyemisting Icecream», Pavlos Andreou constructs a poetic - and inner - space which nonetheless does not preclude the vision or indirect commentary on our contemporary socio-political reality.

This is, in my view, a likeable and dignified first collection, stylistically homogeneous, possessing on the one hand an inner experiential substratum and a refined poetic language, and on the other social criticism and originality.

In the thirty short poems of the collection we observe a poetic vision that essentially strips things of their common appearance, putting in their place its own peculiar, oblique gaze. The poet repeatedly exposes liminal situations, speaks of fractures of consciousness, of alienation, of political and social violence, of the absurdity of history and of human existence, but also, at the same time, of the inexhaustible beauty of life.

To sum up, Pavlos Andreou, ironic and tragic, provocative, contradictory and sensitive, has managed with this book to make us wait on the line. And that, I think, is the main aim of a first collection.

Angeliki Apostolopoulou
Lawyer, Literary Analyst · Book Preface

Pavlos Andreou, a new poetic voice carrying a heavy and foggy inheritance on his youthful shoulders - a slaughtered homeland and the bubbling impulse of his age - traces words, spins through dreamlike worlds, suffocates in the injustice of tear gas…

A bittersweet aftertaste and a blurred memory that struggles to draw out intact images through the smoke. Looking, with the tender melancholy of our fading childhood years, at the fallen drop, we touch the scent of strawberry, vanilla - or was it pistachio? - as we spread under our feet colourful residues mixed with the dust of the melted avenue.

«Whatever pains us» we struggle to turn into texts, into words; we push it away by adding and subtracting silence. Art exorcises the mighty demons of unworthy powers, turns away from rigged games, breathes in (word)-play. The barren era demands a head-on rupture, the resurrection of dead visions with genuine intentions, a direct collision of consciences.

And there is that melted ice cream of doubt too… Boldly he knocks at our door… Once, twice, again and again… The road is long and uphill. Before him, imposing white, untrodden steps… He swears by his words. The moment will come when he will understand. He is denied the right to choose. They will meet him at shadowy crossroads… TO BE CONTINUED…

Pavlos Andreou's second poetry collection follows on from the dynamic beginning made with «Eyemisting Icecream». Although very young, Andreou has found his «voice» and stands firmly upon it.

Pavlos Andreou is a bold poetic voice. He conveys the anguish of his generation, but also the existential anguish and unbearable loneliness of the human being regardless of age. His writing is often surrealist, possesses self-mockery and rare notes of joy. I believe that Pavlos Andreou crafts his verses with a devotion to the perfection of the poem and acts himself as a «tiger mosquito» called to disturb the stagnant waters.

Katerina Tsitsekli
Critic · stigmalogou.gr · 12/03/2025

«Tiger Mosquito» comes as a continuation of the first collection, though different in style, as it is the protest of a young person experiencing the impasses of the contemporary era.

The collection moves between surrealism and anti-poetry, with strong doses of irony, caustic humour and a denunciatory mood. The poet speaks of his dreams that find no fertile ground, of the disappointments he feels as a young person. An atmosphere of anger and loss pervades the collection. The Tiger Mosquito is that tiny insect that comes like a beast at night and stings our conscience to awaken us.

Angeliki Apostolopoulou
Lawyer, Health Professional, Critic · monocleread.gr · 24/04/2025

Pavlos Andreou undoubtedly carries alluring weapons in his quiver. Staging a pervasive atmosphere of existential melancholy, he provokes a total rupture in the placenta of oblivion.

Andreou's poetry rests on the foundations of fertile reaction and resistance, gushing airy images, coveting revolutions. With his second collection, he plunges into the space-time of poetry. His verses gestate vivid metaphors, viscous writing, mysterious symbols. Holding aloft his code of values unscathed, with a shield of subcutaneous mocking tone, he signs his name with his talent.

Giorgos Frangos
Journalist-Art Critic

The young in age but poetically mature Pavlos Andreou, with his new collection, presents an entire poetic world. His inspirations are neither sporadic nor seminal nor occasional.

They serve a complete system and a unified strategy, with finished structure and goals and aims defined from the outset. With this book P.A. brings his poetry into the digital age.

The poet broadens his thematics, modernizes them further and makes them more radical and more revolutionary. In the opening, declarative poem of the collection, from which the whole book takes its name «Tiger Mosquito», the uprising of the mosquito is dramatized. From a pariah serf by day, it transforms by night into a rider, an advancing conqueror.

P.A. then deconstructs, dismantles, lays bare, holds up to ridicule all the artificial, all the spurious of the digital age, as well as the illusion of communication it provides to people. The messages of the book are universal and humanistic, with a conscience-driven character. The main charge laid against contemporary humanity is the insult and destruction of nature.

The poet, with skill and insight, uses legal, lawyerly terminology, lending it poetic and not infrequently subversive content. He does the same with the digital world, the oppressor of the modern human being. In presenting P.A.'s first collection I expressed my certainty that there would be a continuation, indeed predicting that this continuation would be even better. Which is exactly what happened.

Pavlos, since his school years, was a member of the literary group at the Agios Georgios Lyceum and took part in activities and events. It was clear that poetry was beginning to claim him.

During his studies he entered the field of poetry with great drive and it was obvious that he was already breathing for poetry. Rilke wrote in Letters to a Young Poet: «ask yourself in the quietest hour of your night: must I write? Dig deep within yourself to find the answer. And if this answer rings affirmatively, if in the face of this profound question you can raise a firm and simple I must, then build your life according to this need.» Pavlos's answer was I MUST.

Here he is before us now, a young poet with all the impetus of his youthful years, serving poetry, having already published two poetry collections, having been distinguished and honoured with the State Prize for Young Writer. That is no small thing for someone aged 25.

In the first poem of the collection, «Ultrasound», the poet makes an important declaration: «I intend to destroy / my current identity / because I never resembled it for a moment». The intention to destroy the current identity could signal his commitment, with passion and full devotion, to the arena of poetry. It is a personal revolution.

In the Mosquito, the events are mostly set in interior spaces, while legal terminology dominates, the everyday life of the legal profession, in a constantly evolving and endless trial, a Kafkaesque atmosphere. Another important theme is the tragedy of Cyprus. It is true that in recent years the new poetic generation has been increasingly less inspired by our national issue. Here, however, the unhealed wounds of our homeland deeply concern the poet. Famagusta, his ancestral city, often present in the collection, is the symbol of occupied land, of memory and of struggle.

Pavlos, we look forward to the next collection soon. Many more will follow. And we wish you, with the same persistence and revolutionary impetus, to climb ever higher peaks.

Nikolas Koutsodontis
Poet

In his second poetry collection «Tiger Mosquito», Pavlos Andreou - recipient of the State Prize for Young Writer in Cyprus - develops his craft through allegorical and caustic poems.

Mocking and biting, with a very particular handling of his lyrical material, Andreou speaks from the position of a young law graduate who sees before him a world with no future, in which the conflict between humanity and nature has led to dangerous paths for the planet's tomorrow.

For this reason, he puts all of humanity on trial, where «the rooster / as judge received the jury's / verdict» and all creatures together accuse humanity that «You betrayed, you see, the honour / of the environment / shamelessly tipping / the scales of nature».

Disappointed by his own discipline and faced with harsh working conditions, the poetic subject states «Will the gilded diploma / buy back my future?». He is in constant conflict between legal science, which has lost the ability to deliver true Justice, and his destiny to write, to be a poet, following the example of Miltos Sachtouris, who abandoned law for his art.

In «Tiger Mosquito» we are given an image of a world in which «Without direction / the lights of an empty world / arrange ruins / into an absurd order», and we realize how exposed we are to the new technology that alienates us. For the poetic subject, poetry is the only refuge.

Jenny Foundea-Sklavounou
Appellate Judge, Poetess, Art Critic · Book Preface

The latest collection by the very young and highly accomplished poet Pavlos Andreou transports us into a packed, imposing, otherworldly courtroom, where an unusual criminal trial is taking place. The accused: humanity.

Judges and jurors are the representatives of the animal kingdom. Defence counsel is the reptile. Prosecutor is the poet himself. Finally, in the audience, all of us readers watch the outcome with anguish.

The charge is grave: the meta(de)formation of the world into a technological nightmare. Computers and processors, software, algorithms, screens, lasers, filters. A suffocating noose has been created, from which humanity can neither escape nor wishes to. A new political system has been formed, consciously or unconsciously: digital totalitarianism or, if you prefer, digital feudalism.

Writing about his previous collection I had called P.A. a rebel with a cause. In the present book, the creator feels the need to unfold before the reader's eyes the feeling of unbearable pain, of deep disappointment, that overtakes him. With poetry as his only weapon, an ultimate refuge in despair.

We witness the gradual transformation of a mosquito - worn down and half-dead from the torment of the day - into a merciless and extremely dangerous tiger once night falls. The reference to Kafka's well-known work is evident. In the mosquito that in daylight spins about, trapped, but at night grows huge and threatens to drain us, I discern the soul of the poet himself: of the poet who renounces the passive role imposed on him by the New World, casts off the gown and, with stiletto verses, painfully pierces our guiltily subdued consciences.

Francesca L. Manousou
Philologist-Visual Artist

«I would propose / That we legislate Poetry / Keeping the limits / Of imagination inexhaustible» - Pavlos Andreou could rightfully be considered a representative of contemporary social poetry. Or even the denouncer of an unpoetic society, contradictory and «progressing», levelling and directed.

With particular skill he handles and synchronizes the cynical language of rationalism and the subtle dimension of values and feelings. Metaphors, personifications and symbolisms are placed in the service of the discreet yet torrential expression of inner processes. P. Andreou's poetic language moves along specific stable axes of a value system that recalls the ancient Greek epistemology of «living according to reason and virtue».

Deeply human and undeniably existential, his problematic highlights the distinct mission that poetry fulfils as a conscious act. The creator transforms from an external observer into a director, and uses theatrical language in complete synergy with legal and poetic language. Through the dialectic of opposites, the confusion between truth and falsehood, essence and inanity, the authentic and the spurious emerges.

In the effort to bring forth the Truth and render justice, the poetic pen becomes a judge's «hammer». A forensic plea in favour of the apparently powerless, which proves to be a powerful critic in a struggle for survival, denounces with directness and consciousness the loss of identity and reason for being of the contemporary human.

Sometimes with ironic edges and pragmatism, sometimes again with poetic figures of empathy, P.A. documents alienation, reveals the deceit and the trickery, denounces the crushing of the truth. The bankruptcy of the vision for personal and social progress and happiness is annulled by the dominant Cyberspace, which controls speech and abolishes the supreme right of expression.

With the sensitivity of the poet and the flexibility of the equilibrist of language, P.A. becomes the spokesperson of aesthetic and moral principles. With language at once lucid and parabolic, and with full awareness of personal and social conflicts, the poet-thinker links the intellectual act with the stance of life as a conscious freedom of choice, referring the reader to the words of the Stagirite.

Pavlos Andreou emerges as one of the most groundbreaking voices of contemporary Greek letters. Legal precision and poetic freedom coexist in his work in a relationship of mutual nourishment: forensic language does not sterilise the poetry but arms it.

The collection consists of nineteen texts that function as a single, architecturally structured organism, where poetry organically intersects with flash fiction and legal terminology. The collection's dominant symbol is the Tarantula-Smartphone, a cyber-predator: danger becomes worship, the virus becomes a deity.

Andreou's language is a hybrid of forensic rationalism and surrealist imagination. It does not merely describe the digital noise; it reproduces it, invading the reader the way notifications themselves invade life.

«Tarantula Smartphone» is Pavlos Andreou's most mature moment. At only twenty-six, the poet has already attained a linguistic density and thematic range that many seasoned writers would envy. It is not merely a poetic testimony; it is an act of resistance, reminding us that poetry remains the only force that can rescue human identity from digital oblivion.

“A PRISON GUARD in the penal colony of poetry / or, if you prefer, the literary Alcatraz / My last shift / A patrol down the corridor of weighty meanings / to count the verses seeking asylum / Somewhere there I breathed my last.” With allegories and symbols that approach poetic and aesthetic perfection, with lines that peck at the window of the soul like wounded little birds, spontaneous, sincere, realistic and, at the same time, a dreamer, sometimes a caress and sometimes a fist, wonderfully unorthodox, admirably subversive and exceptionally witty, Pavlos Andreou attacks with love! the society of communication! His verses crush hypocrisy, conventionality, racism, empty talk, arrogance, and the small, quiet revolutions of ordinary people, in language that burns like a fever: “Inside: comic incidents with solemn signatures / blunders, strange slips of the tongue / videos of intimate moments / with the wrong lovers / the boss scratching his armpit / in full-screen resolution / Yet among them, the worst / That red button / ruler of the folder / pulled the toilet chain / like an ultimatum to swallow them / ‘I resign’.” And, of course, he does not spare poetry itself, the art that gives him breath, since what wounds can also heal. With his poetry, Pavlos Andreou touches a bare wire. He is not afraid of the truth. On the contrary: he opens his arms wide and whispers psalms in its ear.

EACH poem in the collection is a journey. To an unknown destination. A known destination kills curiosity and, therefore, creation. You will return, of course; it could not be otherwise. But in the meantime you will have shared, perhaps even fully embraced, the poet's anxieties, thoughts and concerns, and that revolutionary gaze which pierces wretched conventions like a sword: “Until one day / he closed a high-profile case / that had lain in wait for decades / in the heart of a file.” “Like everyone, the poet is a prisoner of himself, but he manages to fly with his cage.” So said Gregoire Lacroix. But is that not life itself? Those who are free crawl; those who are enslaved fly.

Pavlos Andreou balances between white and black, light and darkness, hope and despair, happiness and unhappiness - although in our times their differences have become hard to discern and the distances between them almost invisible - shattering the distorting mirror of an age in which concepts and meanings have lost their etymological and essential core: “I stumbled as I ran / past display windows / of euphoria filters / One more selfie / and in the background / a crowd shrouded in haze / At first I thought they were celebrating / Then mourning / Finally, a ritual / of poisonous contact / They gathered in formation / Instead of wreaths / they carried chargers / Instead of candles / lit camera flashes / Instead of hymns / notification sounds / from loaded keyboards: / ding-ding, bzzz, tap-tap.”

If times and places, together with vital historical events and their political and social developments, spark corresponding impulses to write, our own era is, above all, an inexhaustible source of literary inspiration, or of other kinds of record across the many fields of human knowledge.

In keeping with Cicero's prescient dictum «O tempora! O mores!», the conditions of life are now unstable in a constantly changing world, and the resulting rhythms of life mechanical, in the face of revolutionary discoveries and unprecedented technological phenomena, and of the feelings and anxious concerns that follow from them and preoccupy the thinking person of today.

Thoughtful are the perspectives of the inventive ideas and metaphorical symbols, seen through the prism of topical observations, that feed the poetic and narrative writing of the young Pavlos Andreou, who was deservedly honoured in 2022 with the State Prize for Young Writer. His current collection is foreshadowed both by its allegorical title and by the cover artwork, made with the brush of Artificial Intelligence, or of artificial contrivance, to use another expression that is, in this case, more accurate: a smartphone - a «smart phone» - on a tall stepped pedestal, spreading the claw-like tentacles of its tarantula-spider. Around the surreal «monument», users kneel in awe and prayer. What messages, one wonders, does the reddish dove perched at the top of the metal frame of this quasi-idolatrous device bring?

The implicit answers and the connotations of the many unanswered questions run through the book's 38 pages, with the tiny print of its 19 poetic and prose texts, which evidently call for their meaning to be decoded. The ant-like typeface alludes to the people of today, with the strength of ants before the omnipotence of the New Technologies, and especially of ever-expanding AI. Telling are the lines of the theatrically vivid title poem, which captures the ritual described above: «The mayor at the podium / with a warped copy-paste smile / said: “Dear fellow citizens / blessed be the eternal connection. / May no screen / ever stay switched off.” / I was startled when they all bowed together / and, kneeling, / touched the cracked stone. / I drew closer, zooming in / on the hesitation / the curiosity / the fear. / At the centre rose the statue. / Metallic. / Gleaming. / With spider legs / hooked into the square all around. / An inscription flashed, emphatically lighting up / the name of the deity: “Tarantula Smartphone”».

The ironic mood turns playful, since the phone has been transformed from a practical tool into a popular toy and an object of self-mocking overuse in the hands of young and old, in the short story titled with the English words «Smart and Heart», in keeping with the official language of technology. It recounts the imaginative adventures of an anthropomorphic phone that escapes after midnight from its owner's bedside table. While he, on waking, searches for it desperately, the phone lives moments of freedom «without the burden of replying to an unread message, without the fatigue of waiting on an overbearing platform…».

Yet the poet-narrator's thought and concern cannot escape poetry, as the creative expression par excellence of artful, intelligent Logos, and not as some standardised, falsely attributed construct of AI. Hence he sets against it the nature and role of true poetry, the place and mission of real poets amid the countless speechless voices or the loud cries of our anti-poetic times.

Tragic are the findings and cautionary the danger signals in the emphatic poems on poetics, which centre on the drastic effect and anti-creative consequences of AI for the authenticity and originality of human creation in literary writing.

Aphoristic in diagnosis and openly enigmatic in suggestion are the lines of the closing stanzas, which we quote in turn: «As if we didn't know / that some poets / have been writing with artificial hands / for so many years now.» «“Poetry may now scatter / thousands of words of artificial intelligence / but at some point, if only for a moment, / it dictates an awareness of death”». «Two or three tears are enough / for the God you renounced / believing yourself the deus ex machina / in the tragedy of a bland piece of writing / cooked in the steam of your phone.»

The same theme, with sharpened barbs, runs through the opening detective story, which is complemented by the closing narrative parable. Specifically, in «Poetic Offences Police» the inspector concludes: «His crime goes beyond plagiarism. Our department was set up to examine whether he at least felt something before writing a poem.» And in «Poetic Acceleration», the exhausted runner of poetry, on a track of rigid, cynical hurdles to be overcome, announces his overriding decision: «Beside me the machine keeps on winning, producing, being glorified. […] I refuse to be persuaded. I snatch the baton from a dream and I run!»

Through this, his third collection, Pavlos Andreou persistently, and in defiance of easy, well-trodden roads, seeks out steep, rugged paths, following not given, misty routes but the fitting, luminous courses towards «the very lofty ladder of Poetry», in Cavafy's words. Beyond, however, the existential quests of painful contests and hard struggles for «the city of ideas», he never ceases to reflect on and weigh, guided by an awakened conscience and his own poetic measure, the subversive challenges of our days.

Alongside the visible or unforeseen stakes of technological mechanisms, a wealth of timeless issues, with varied meanings and in the linguistic garb of modernity, are placed under the microscope of poetic sensibility: from multifaceted diversity, protean love relationships and forms of motherhood, and honest, self-serving or even immoral professional dealings, to the inhumane treatment of homeless migrants, without omitting pointed barbs at the problem of the continuing Turkish military occupation of our homeland, with Famagusta at its forefront.

In the poem «Guided Tour», the lines of tragedy and drama are both metaphorical and literal, denouncing the Green Line and the checkpoints, with the armed sentry firing at our wounds.

A praiseworthy harvest of shared meaning and many-sided poetic transformation.
